My Generator Set is Breaking Down, or Maybe Not?

For some industries that couldn’t afford to have interruption in their operation will surely need at least a set of generator in their premise. But, sometimes a break down is unpredictable especially when you knew that your genset is not well-maintained. If you are ensuring a proper maintenance & servicing, a sudden break down will not be your concern. If your generator does fail you on one fine day, stay calm and check for these 5 items. They might be the reasons why your generator breaks down.

My Generator Set is Breaking Down, or Maybe Not?

1. Battery

If the battery in your car is weak, you will not be able to start your engine. Similar to your car, a generator also needs to have a good battery in order to give it an electrical charge. When the genset battery is running low or the connections are poor, the supply will also be affected. There’s a good chance that your generator won’t turn over!

So, remember to constantly test the battery levels. In the event, the genset batteries are beyond their shelf life, just get them replaced. You will never want your genset to fail you during emergency.

2. The Source of Power

Often, when the generator breaks down, we will never have thought of the fuel levels. This is a common mistake that often happened to owners of fuel-powered generator sets. Therefore, before you start googling for a service provider, try to check on the fuel levels. Always ensure that there is sufficient fuel in your genset for an uninterrupted operation.

3. Not in Auto Mode

This is the most important step; to set your generator to the Auto mode. Auto means that, in the event of any power failure, your generator will be “notified” and start performing its assigned task.

4. Just Too “Hot”

After checking the fuels & battery, the next to do is to examine the coolant levels. A genset usually shut down if they become too hot and this is often caused by lack of coolant in the system. If you find that your generator starts up well, but automatically shut down after a while, then this probably indicate a cooling issue.

5. Leakage

If you are topping up the oil/fuel frequently, but yet it is not working well, then it’s time to engage a qualified professional for a thorough checkup. Sometimes, the fluid leak is another common cause for the breakdown of a generator.
